Obama tells EU to take decisive action on debt (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Barack Obama pressed European Union officials on Monday to act quickly and decisively to resolve their sovereign debt crisis, which the White House said was weighing on the U.S. economy.

After meeting European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Obama said he was keen to see the euro zone crisis end.

"I communicated to them that the United States stands ready to do our part to help them resolve this issue. This is of huge importance to our economy," Obama, seated next to the EU leaders, told reporters.

A possible step would be for Washington to support more aid to Europe from the International Monetary Fund, where the United States is the biggest shareholder.

But William Kennard, the U.S. envoy in Brussels, said there was no discussion of the United States making any financial obligations to help Europe or increasing its payments to the IMF - moves bound to face stiff political opposition given fiscal pressures gripping the U.S. Congress.

Rather, the Obama administration has focused on offering advice on rescue programs and how to make tough political decisions drawn from its experience during the U.S. financial crisis of 2008.

The U.S.-EU summit furthered those discussions, Kennard said, refusing to discuss any specifics.

"Ultimately, we believe that this is a problem that Europe has to solve and has the capacity and the resources to solve it," he said at a news conference.

Europe conveyed that the situation is difficult and leaders are not complacent, the EU Ambassador to the United States Joao Vale de Almeida said.

"Europe is committed. Europe is determined," he said, adding that the December 9 EU summit would be a "milestone."

EU leaders are expected to agree on steps toward fiscal union, considered critical for a longer term solution to Europe's debt crisis.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the IMF already has substantial resources and has a role to play in helping Europe but also underscored the U.S. view that Europe has the capacity to handle its own problems.

"The issue here is a European issue and Europe needs to act," he said.

Obama has been in regular telephone contact with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and other European leaders as debt woes have piled up in Greece, Italy and Spain, hurting stock markets and raising doubts about U.S. exports and growth.

Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and top White House advisers took part in Monday's closed-door talks, the latest in a series of annual summits between American and EU leaders.

The meeting did not include Merkel, Sarkozy and other European heads of state who will ultimately need to make tough decisions to salvage the euro zone.

But Van Rompuy and Barroso wield influence as heads of key EU institutions at the heart of efforts to address the crisis, which has thrown the future of the 17-nation currency bloc into doubt at a moment of weakness for the global economy.

JOBS OBSTACLE

Avoiding contagion from Europe is critical for Obama, a Democrat whose re-election prospects next November hinge on his ability to shield the U.S. economy from another downturn and bring down the unemployment rate of 9 percent.

"If Europe is contracting or if Europe is having difficulties, then it is much more difficult for us to create good jobs at home," Obama said.

So far, U.S. exports have remained strong in spite of the turmoil in Europe, rising in the first nine months of 2011 by about 15 percent from the same period last year.

Exports to the EU account for about 2 percent of total U.S. output, so a mild EU recession is expected to shave only about one- or two-tenths of a percentage point from U.S. growth in the first half of 2012, Wells Fargo estimates.

Van Rompuy said it was wrong to suggest Europe was the only drag on the global economy and said it was important for other economies to pitch in to boost growth.

In a joint statement after the meeting, the United States and European Union said they agreed on the need to work together with emerging economies to rebalance global growth and for the United States to address its fiscal issues in the medium term.

They also said they were determined to see Iran comply with its international obligations related to its nuclear program. Van Rompuy said the European Union was preparing new restrictive measures to further isolate Tehran.

The joint statement, issued hours after Brussels announced new financial sanctions on Syria, also urged Damascus "to end violence immediately" and permit a peaceful and democratic transition of government.

Catherine Ashton, the EU's foreign policy chief, and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also took part in the talks which lasted just over two hours.

Bellator 59: ?Pitbull? takes out Pellegrino, Dantas ends Vila?s run

Kurt Pellegrino has retired again. This time it wasn't as voluntary.

The UFC lightweight veteran took a fight with one of the young guns of MMA in Bellator and got waxed.

Patricky "Pitbull" Freire caught Pellegrino with a straight right that dropped him (2:28 mark). When they have someone in trouble, the Pitbull Brothers go for the kill. Patricky jumped on Pellegrino's back and trapped one his arms as he wailed away at the defenseless fighter. Referee Kevin McDonald stopped it, saving Pellegrino from unnecessary damage at the 0:36 mark of the first round.

Pellegrino, 32, retired from active fighting back in May, but couldn't resist the opportunity to fight in his home state when offered the shot with Bellator in Atlantic City, N.J. A native of Point Pleasant, N.J., Pellegrino was 7-5 in the UFC.

In one of the bigger bouts at Bellator 59, Alexis Vila fell short of completing his crazy journey to a tourney title at the age of 40. Vila lost a decision against Eduardo Dantas. Dantas won the Bellator bantamweight tourney and got himself a title shot against Zach Makovsky. Dantas, 22, also took out Ed West and Wilson Reis on his way to the tournament victory.

Factbox: Barney Frank's long, colorful career (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Barney Frank, one of the most colorful members of the House of Representatives, is expected to announce he is quitting after 32 years of representing his Massachusetts district, congressional aides said on Monday.

Here are some highlights of the career of Frank, a liberal Democrat:

* As chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Frank co-wrote and won passage in 2010 of major Wall Street regulatory reforms. Known as "Dodd-Frank," (he collaborated with then-Senate Banking Committee Chairman Christopher Dodd), the measure was a reaction to the 2007-2009 financial crisis and was opposed by most Republicans in Congress.

* In 1987, Frank became one of the first U.S. politicians to publicly acknowledge his homosexuality. A couple of years later, it was reported that a male prostitute was living in Frank's Washington, D.C., home and that he was employed as a personal aide. The House reprimanded Frank for his actions.

When ethics lapses hit other congressmen in recent years, Frank consistently withheld judgment and remarks to reporters, noting his own past ethics problem.

* Frank, 71, is known for his rapid-fire speech and razor-sharp wit. In 2009, at a town hall meeting, he was confronted by a detractor holding an altered picture of President Barack Obama with a Hitler-like mustache. Referring to Obama's healthcare reform plans, the woman asked Frank how he could continue to "support a Nazi policy."

Frank shot back: "On what planet do you spend most of your time?" He then added: "It is a tribute to the First Amendment (of the U.S. Constitution, which allows free speech) that this kind of vile, contemptible nonsense is so freely propagated," and "trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to argue with a dining room table. I have no interest in it."

* Frank played a central role in crafting Wall Street bailout legislation in 2008, known as TARP, and urged Republicans to support the measure, which became a flashpoint in the 2008 and 2010 elections. He also was a force behind affordable housing efforts.

* Frank is a close confidant of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, now the Democratic leader in the House. Frank's sister, Ann Lewis, is a well-known Democratic Party operative who advised Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign and President Bill Clinton when he was in the White House.

Hamas: Palestinians to skip interim government

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? A senior Hamas figure says that rival Palestinian leaders have quietly decided to keep their respective governments in the West Bank and Gaza in place until elections are held.

This arrangement would make it less risky for West Bank-based Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to pursue reconciliation with the widely shunned Islamic militant Hamas group, which rules Gaza.

It would bypass the contentious issue of forming an interim Palestinian unity government before elections, tentatively scheduled for May.

The Hamas figure says the understanding was reached in talks last week between Abbas and Hamas chief Khaled Mashaal. He spoke on condition of anonymity because the leaders have not made their decision public.

An Abbas envoy, Azzam al-Ahmed, denied on Saturday that such a deal had been made.

(AP) ? An Islamist Party is on track to become the largest party in Morocco's new parliament with a dominant showing after two-thirds of the seats were announced by the Interior Ministry on Saturday.

The Justice and Development Party has taken 80 seats, almost twice as many as the next most successful party, with 282 seats announced out of the 395 up for grabs in the nationwide vote a day earlier.

Barring a massive upset, the PJD ? known by its French initials ? will be the largest party in the new parliament and charged with forming a new government ? making another Islamist victory in an election brought about by the Arab Spring.

Last month, Tunisia's Ennahda Party took 40 percent of the seats in elections in the country that started a wave of pro-democracy uprisings across the Middle East after its people overthrew their long-serving president.

Egypt is set to hold elections of its own on Monday that are also expected to be dominated by Islamist parties, lending increasing weight to the view that religious movements have been some of the biggest benefactors of the Arab Spring.

Like the rest of the region, Morocco was swept by pro-democracy protests decrying lack of freedoms and widespread corruption, which the king attempted to defuse over the summer by ordering the constitution modified to grant more powers to the Parliament and prime minister and then holding elections a year earlier.

Activists, however, have called the moves insincere and clamored for a boycott.

Complete results, including those of 90 seats reserved for women and youth and the 23 remaining regular seats, will be announced Sunday. PJD is expected to ultimately win up to 110 seats.

The Islamists' biggest rivals in Morocco's elections is a coalition of eight liberal, pro-government parties led by Finance Minister Salaheddine Mezouar, which has amassed more than 111 seats, but under the new constitution the party with the most seats gets first crack at forming a new government.

The Islamists must now find coalition partners, with their natural allies being the "Democratic Bloc," an alliance of the right-of-center Istiqlal, or Independence Party, the left-of-center Union of Socialist Progressive Forces and the former communist party ? venerable political parties that have been eclipsed by Mezouar's so-called Group of Eight.

"We are ready to work with the PJD on the condition that all the parties of the bloc participate in this government," affirmed Mohammed al-Khalifa, a member of the Istiqlal Party's political bureau.

Ali Bouabid, a member of the USFP's leadership, agreed that an alliance was certainly possible and must be discussed.

"If the bloc allies with the PJD it must be on the basis of a strong political program," he said. Such an alliance would be 165 seats strong and a majority of the results announced so far.

In recent years Morocco's Islamists have cultivated an image as honest outsiders battling corruption, and seeking to improve services and increase employment, rather than focusing on moral issues such as whether women wear the Islamic headscarf or the sale of alcohol.

Morocco, a close U.S. ally and popular European tourist destination suffers from high unemployment and widespread poverty.

With dozens of parties running and a complex system of proportional representation, Morocco's parliaments are typically divided up between many parties each with no more than a few dozen seats, requiring complex coalitions that are then dominated by the king.

The government announced a 45-percent turnout in Friday's contest, slightly more than legislative elections in 2007, but still less than local elections in 2009 and the summer's constitutional referendum.

There are almost 13.5 million registered voters in this North African kingdom of 32 million, though it is estimated that there are many more people of voting age not registered, something an European observer team noted in their report that otherwise praised the election as free and fair.

"The completeness of these lists are a key element of the electoral process and the delegation regrets that the current system, according to some, does not make it easy for citizens to register. In effect, a considerable part of the some 20 million Moroccans of election age are not on the lists," the Council of Europe said in a statement.

As in 2007, a significant number of the ballots cast were invalid, in some cases because voters marked them incorrectly, but in others it was clearly a form of protest with the entire ballot or all the parties crossed out.

The U.S.-based National Democratic Institute, which sent an election observer mission to Morocco, estimated that 20 percent of the ballots they saw during counting were invalid, suggesting a "citizen interest in further and deeper political reforms," according to its statement.

"The vigor with which some people expressed their protests on their ballot form was noted by many of our observers in all parts of the country," said Bob Rae, a member of the delegation and the leader of Canada's Liberal Party.

(This version corrects that final results expected Sunday.)

Report: Millions of birds killed by power lines

Tens of millions of flamingos, storks, pelicans and other migratory birds are being killed across the world when they fly into power lines, according to a new study.

The AFP news agency reported that wildfires had been caused in dry areas of the United States and Eastern Europe by birds hitting power lines, then falling to the ground in flames.

The study was published at Convention on Migratory Species in Bergen, Norway, according the news agency.

Tens of millions of birds are killed in collisions and hundreds of thousands are electrocuted in Africa and Eurasia, the study said.

Dutch ornithologist Hein Prinsen, who took part in the study, told AFP that "collision and electrocution are among the most important human-related causes for bird mortality," along with hunting.

Solution needed
There are about 43 million miles of power lines in the world, the news agency reported.

"Today, Eastern Europe is a hot spot for problems, for great bustards and birds of prey for example," John O'Sullivan, an ex-member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, told AFP.

"But the worst situation may well be soon to be found in India and Africa where vast amounts of power lines are being built and where there are very large populations of birds," he added.

O'Sullivan said it "completely makes sense" to try to solve the problem because power outages resulting from collisions had a "high costs for society."

AFP said that 12 percent of blue cranes died annually after flying into power lines in South Africa. The blue crane is that country's national bird.

Sarkozy, Merkel agree to stop sniping on ECB crisis (Reuters)

STRASBOURG, France (Reuters) ? France and Germany agreed on Thursday to stop arguing in public over whether the European Central Bank should do more to rescue the euro zone from a deepening sovereign debt crisis.

President Nicolas Sarkozy and Chancellor Angela Merkel said after talks with Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti that they trusted the independent central bank and would not touch its inflation-fighting mandate when they propose changes of the European Union's treaty to achieve closer fiscal union.

They also demonstrated their backing for Monti, an unelected technocrat, to surmount Italy's daunting economic challenges, in contrast to the barely concealed disdain they showed for his predecessor, media billionaire Silvio Berlusconi.

"We all stated our confidence in the ECB and its leaders and stated that in respect of the independence of this essential institution we must refrain from making positive or negative demands of it," Sarkozy told a joint news conference in the eastern French city of Strasbourg.

French ministers have called for the central bank to intervene massively to counter a market stampede out of euro zone government bonds, while Merkel and her ministers have said the EU treaty bars it from acting as a lender of last resort.

The Netherlands however moved closer to endorsing the ECB as lender of last resort, apparently breaking ranks with Germany.

Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager said he would prefer that the European Financial Stability Facility, the euro zone bailout fund, should be strengthened. But if the EFSF did not succeed, other measures would have to be considered.

"In a crisis one should never exclude anything beforehand. In the end, something has to happen," he said.

Sarkozy said Paris and Berlin would circulate joint proposals before a December 9 EU summit for treaty amendments to entrench tougher budget discipline in the 17-nation euro area.

Merkel said the proposals for more intrusive powers to enforce EU budget rules, including the right to take delinquent governments to the European Court of Justice, were a first step toward deeper fiscal union.

But she said they would not modify the statute and mission of the central bank, nor soften her opposition to issuing joint euro zone bonds, except perhaps at the end of a long process of fiscal integration.

Some French and EU officials hoped Berlin would soften its resistance to a bigger crisis-fighting role for the ECB after Germany itself suffered a failed bond auction on Wednesday, showing how investors are wary even of Europe's safest haven.

"There is urgency (for ECB intervention)," Foreign Minister Alain Juppe told France Inter radio before the meeting.

Sarkozy took a step toward Merkel this week by agreeing to amend the treaty to insert powers to override national budgets in euro area states that go off the rails. But there was no sign of a German concession on euro zone bonds or the ECB's role.

"This is not about give and take," Merkel said. Only when European countries reformed their economies and cut their deficits would borrowing costs converge. "To try to achieve this by compulsion would weaken us all."

With contagion spreading fast, a majority of 20 leading economists polled by Reuters predicted that the euro zone was unlikely to survive the crisis in its current form, with some envisaging a "core" group that would exclude Greece.

Analysts believe that sense of crisis will in the end force dramatic action. "I think we are moving closer to a policy response probably, which could be either more aggressive ECB action or the idea of euro bonds could gain some traction," said Rainer Guntermann, strategist at Commerzbank.

RESISTANCE

In signs of public resistance to austerity in two southern states under EU/IMF bailout programs, riot police clashed with workers at Greece's biggest power producer protesting against a new property tax, and Portuguese workers staged a 24-hour general strike.

Credit ratings agency Fitch downgraded Portugal's rating to junk status, saying a deepening recession made it "much more challenging" for the government to cut the budget deficit, highlighting a vicious circle facing Europe's debtors.

German bonds fell to their lowest level in nearly a month after Wednesday's auction, in which the German debt agency found no buyers for half of a 6 billion euro 10-year bond offering at a record low 2.0 percent interest rate.

The shortage of bids drove Germany's cost of borrowing over 10 years to 2.2 percent, above the 1.88 percent markets charge the United States and the 2.18 percent that heavily indebted Britain has to pay.

Bond investors are effectively on strike in the euro zone, interbank lending to euro area banks is freezing up, ever more banks are dependent on the ECB for funding, and depositors are withdrawing increasing amounts from southern European banks.

"It's quite telling that there has been upward pressure on yields in Germany - it might begin to change perceptions in Germany," Standard and Poor's head of sovereign ratings, David Beers, told an economic conference in Dublin.

In one possible response, people familiar with the matter said the ECB is looking at extending the term of loans it offers banks to two or even three years to try to prevent a credit crunch that chokes the bloc's economy.

Monti repeated Italy's goal of achieving a balanced budget by 2013 but said there was room for a broader discussion about how fiscal targets could be adjusted in a worse-than-expected recession.

Italian bond yields' jumped this month to levels above 7 percent widely seen as unbearable in the long term, despite stop-go intervention by the ECB to buy limited quantities, triggering Berlusconi's fall.

Keeping Italy solvent and able to borrow on capital markets is vital to the sustainability of the euro zone. Key Italian bond auctions early next week will test market confidence.

GERMAN EXPOSURE

German officials said the failed auction did not mean the government had refinancing problems and several analysts said Berlin just needed to offer a more attractive yield.

But it was a sign that, as the bloc's paymaster, Germany may face creeping pressure as the crisis deepens that may cause it to re-examine its refusal to embrace a broader solution.

Economy Minister Philipp Roesler of the Free Democratic junior coalition partner called for parliament to reject euro zone bonds "because we don't want German interest rates to rise dramatically."

But some market analysts are convinced joint debt issuance will eventually have to be part of a political solution to hold the euro zone together.

"Although it is not easy to see how the region will get to a fiscal union with Eurobonds, we believe that this is the path that will be chosen," JP Morgan economist David Mackie said in a research note.

With time running out for politicians to forge a crisis plan that is seen as credible by the markets, the European Commission presented a study on Wednesday of joint euro zone bonds as a medium-term way to stabilize debt markets alongside tougher fiscal rules for member states.

The borrowing costs of almost all euro zone states, even those previously seen as safe such as France, Austria and the Netherlands, have spiked in the last two weeks as panicky investors dumped paper no longer seen as risk-free.

Yemen sets date for presidential vote

Yemen scheduled early presidential elections for early next year on Saturday in line with a power-sharing deal aimed at ending a nine-month political crisis, according to the country's official news agency.

The agreement would make President Ali Abdullah Saleh the fourth dictator pushed from power this year by the Arab Spring uprisings, although it has been rejected by many protesters because it would grant the reviled leader immunity from prosecution and does not include far-reaching political changes like those brought about by the uprisings in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

The U.S.-backed Gulf Arab proposal signed Wednesday in the Saudi capital Riyadh calls for Saleh to pass power to his deputy within 30 days, after a new government sworn in by the vice president passes a law protecting Saleh and his associates from prosecution. Presidential elections also were to be held within 90 days, well ahead of the original date in 2013.

It came after months of resistance by the leader of 33 years despite massive protests calling for him to step down. Saleh had agreed to sign the deal at least three previous times only to back out at the last minute.

Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi said Saturday that the vote will be held on Feb. 21 and no party has the right to annul or change the decree, SABA reported. He made the announcement after Saleh gave him "the constitutional authorities to carry out dialogue with the parties that signed the Gulf initiative."

While it was welcomed by the U.S., which fears instability in the country that's home to one of the world's most active al-Qaida branches, the agreement has failed to end the mass protests that have rocked Sanaa and other cities since February.

Thousands took to the streets on Saturday to demand that Saleh face trial for allegations of corruption and the killing of hundreds of protesters as his security forces brutally tried to end the uprising against him.

The deal doesn't explicitly ban Saleh from the country's political life ? raising fears he could continue to play a political role.

Violence also continued, with Yemeni warplanes killing 80 anti-government tribesmen who overran part of a military camp in the Arhab region north of the capital.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to brief the media, said that warplanes and artillery had pounded the armed tribesmen for the past two days.

The number of deaths was not confirmed. But a soldier from Yemen's 63rd Brigade who fled the camp said tribesmen had overrun it several days ago. He spoke by telephone from Arhab, asking not to be identified for fear of government reprisal. The soldier said the tribesmen killed about 20 soldiers.

The U.S. Marines' top general, James Amos, sprinted up and down the Helmand River Valley in southern Afghanistan on Thursday, visiting frontline Marines at nine remote outposts to share Thanksgiving and applaud their gains against the Taliban in a region where al-Qaida hatched the 9/11 plot a decade ago.

Traveling mostly in an MV-22 Osprey, the hybrid that flies like an airplane and takes off and lands like a helicopter, Amos began shortly after daylight and finished 14 hours later ? and, improbably, managed to confront just one turkey dinner.

At one point the 65-year-old Amos referred to his unusual daytrip as the "Bataan death march," a reference to the gruesome forced march of American POWs in the Philippines during World War II.

Amos shook hands with hundreds of Marines, all veterans of tough fighting in Helmand Province, which has been a focal point of the U.S.-led strategy to counter the Taliban and other insurgent groups. The Marines have vastly improved security in Helmand over the past year, but with President Barack Obama having ordered 33,000 U.S. troops to withdraw from Afghanistan by next September, the prospects for sustaining those gains are uncertain, and the subject of debate at home.

At each stop Amos struck similar themes in pep talks to his Marines: they are coming close to winning, and when the Marine Corps leaves Afghanistan it will shift its focus to the Pacific, where he said "a whole lot of opportunities" will await a Corps no longer bogged down by land wars in the greater Middle East. He also said Thanksgiving is a time for Marines to reflect on "the unique fraternal bond" among men and women at war.

Marine Sgt. Maj. Michael Barrett, the top enlisted Marine, who accompanied Amos, said that for most troops Thanksgiving was just another day at war ? until they finished their work.

"Then they'll have a meal of a lifetime," he said.

The feast was finally set for Amos when he arrived after dark at Camp Dwyer, the southern-most stop on his trip. He helped heap plates with roast turkey, baked ham and prime rib ? with all the traditional fixings ? and then sat amongst the troops to finish it off.

Amos said "Happy Thanksgiving" at each Marine outpost, but the troops did not seem in a festive mood ? at least in the presence of their commandant. The business of war does not take a holiday. When he asked the Marines what was on their minds, they asked about the future of the Corps, the latest of Washington's stalled budget debate, the possibility of seeing some of their retirement benefits go away, and internal Marine issues.

Some conveyed a sense of confidence that Afghanistan would soon be behind them.

At Combat Outpost Hanson, one member of the 3rd battalion, 6th Marine Regiment asked, "Who do you want us to fight next, sir?" Amos said he did not know, but he reassured the Marine that there would be no shortage of security crises in the years ahead.

At Combat Outpost Alcatraz, in Sangin district where fierce fights against the Taliban have waned only recently, the top overall commander of the war, Marine Gen. John Allen, joined Amos for a pep talk to several dozen Marines.

Allen said Marines will "go home under the victory pennant," but he stressed that the struggle to degrade Taliban influence and build up Afghan security forces ? in Helmand and throughout Afghanistan ? is far from over.

"As big as this is, and as hard as it has been, we are going to be successful here," Allen said. "We're going to win this. We're going to liberate these people, we're going to set this country up to be a free country in one of the toughest regions in the world."

There are now about 97,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. All are scheduled to leave by the end of 2014.

Amos clearly relished the chance to see so many combat Marines, but his trip was no joy ride. His itinerary was a closely-held secret, and the aircraft on which he flew was heavily armed.

As a CH-53 helicopter lifted off from a barren field across a dirt highway in the northern Helmand village of Puzeh, with Amos and part of his entourage aboard, a bearded special operations Marine quipped, "Cross your fingers." And then, as the chopper rose above a billowing wall of powdery dust, the Marine added, only half jokingly, "Whew! Getting the commandant shot down at your (outpost) would not be a good thing."

Chiefs pick up ex-Broncos quarterback Orton (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The Kansas City Chiefs picked up former Denver quarterback Kyle Orton on Wednesday as they try to salvage their playoff hopes following the loss of starter Matt Cassel.

Orton was cut on Tuesday after the Broncos handed the reins over to fan favorite Tim Tebow, and the 29-year-old was quickly snapped up by the AFC West rival Chiefs, who announced the move on their website (kcchiefs.com).

Kansas City (4-6) lost Cassel to a season-ending hand injury on November 13 and were forced to use inexperienced backup Tyler Palko in a 34-3 loss to the New England Patriots on Monday.

Orton started the first five games of the season for the Broncos but was just 1-4 before being benched. He joined the Broncos from Chicago in 2009 and threw for more than 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns in each of his first two seasons.

The Chiefs have lost three in a row and are two games behind division leaders Oakland.

China sees factory growth slowing slightly in 2012 (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? Growth in China's factory output is likely to fall slightly to 12-13 percent in 2012 due to weakening global demand, the industry ministry said on Thursday, but that level probably still implies a comfortable GDP growth rate of 8-9 percent next year.

Annual industrial output in the world's second-largest economy is expected to grow 14 percent this year but activity at home and abroad is cooling as tight domestic monetary conditions and weak U.S. and European economies weigh on orders.

Many economists believe that if China's factory output grows by between 11-13 percent a year, it would be enough to avoid a "hard landing" and keep the economy growing at around 8-9 percent, the level at which China will be creating enough jobs to stem any public unrest.

Fears that China may be set for a sharp slowdown flared again on Wednesday after HSBC's flash PMI survey showed the factory sector shrank the most in 32 months in November on signs of domestic economic weakness. The results amplified concerns that the global economy may tip into recession.

"The industrial production growth rate will show some moderation next year, judging from the domestic and external environment," Huang Libin, a senior official with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said at an online briefing.

He predicted factory output growth in 2012 would be 1-2 percentage points lower than this year, but did not elaborate.

The official Xinhua news agency later cited Huang as predicting industrial production would grow 14 percent this year.

In October, the ministry forecast factory growth of 11 percent for this year and 2012 -- a long-standing outlook.

Growth in factory output hit its weakest pace in a year in October, even though expansion in the first 10 months of 2011 averaged 14.1 percent.

The purchasing managers' (PMI) survey implied annual industrial output growth in China will moderate in coming months to an annual rate of 11-12 percent, a pace not seen since 2009 when China was pulling out of the global financial crisis.

In addition to weakness in its key Western export markets and worries about the deepening euro zone debt crisis, China is also seeing a slowdown in its once red-hot real estate sector, with falling home prices and sales.

"The economy faces relatively big downside risks but we haven't seen any signs of a hard landing. So conditions for an across-the-board policy easing are not ripe yet," said Qiao Yongyuan, an economist at CEBM in Shanghai.

He expects annual growth in factory output to ease to 12.5 percent in 2012 from this year's 13.7 percent.

The government would continue to rein in sectors with outdated technology and those that consume too much energy, Huang said.

The ministry expects China's economy to grow an annual 9.2 percent this year, and the pace could slow modestly in 2012.

China's economy grew 10.4 percent in 2010.

26 bodies dumped in mass slaying in Guadalajara (AP)

GUADALAJARA, Mexico ? The bound and gagged bodies of 26 young men were found dumped Thursday in the heart of Mexico's second-largest city, in what experts said could mark a new stage in the full-scale war between the country's two main drug cartels, Sinaloa and the Zetas.

The bodies were stuffed in two vans and a pickup truck abandoned on an expressway near the Milennium Arches in Guadalajara, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the picturesque city that hosted last month's Pan American Games.

Most of the men died of asphyxia, according to officials in Jalisco state where Guadalajara is located, though initial reports indicated some had been shot.

The victims, apparently between the ages of 25 and 35, all had the words "Milenio Zetas" or "Milenium" written on their chests in oil, said Jalisco state Interior Secretary Fernando Guzman Perez. A law enforcement official who was not authorized to speak on the record said the writing was apparently meant as the killers' calling card, identifying the assassins as being from the Zetas and a smaller, allied gang, the Milenio Cartel.

The official said a banner found in one of the vehicles ? whose contents Guzman Perez refused to reveal ? was in fact signed by the Zetas. Mexican cartels frequently leave threatening messages with the bodies of their victims as a way of intimidating rivals and claiming responsibility for their actions.

The killings, apparently carried out before dawn, bore an eerie similarity to the Sept. 20 dumping of 35 bodies on an expressway in the Gulf coast city of Veracruz.

The victims in the Veracruz mass slaying were purportedly Zetas and the killers were allegedly linked to the Sinaloa cartel; those two cartels have emerged as Mexico's most powerful, and have each been trying to expand into each others' territories.

Raul Benitez, a professor at Mexico's National Autonomous University who studies security issues, said the Guadalajara mass killing may have been retaliation for the Veracruz slayings.

"I think the Zetas are responding by giving back in kind ... it is a game of one-upmanship," said Benitez.

The Guadalajara International Book Fair, which opens Saturday, is expected to draw as many as 600,000 visitors from around the world and describes itself as the world's most important Spanish-language book fair. The bodies were found about a mile (1.6 kilometers) from the Expo Guadalajara events center.

Best known as the home of mariachi music and tequila, Guadalajara also sits on the main highway running through western Mexico from the methamphetamine-producing state of Michoacan north toward the Pacific Coast state of Sinaloa.

In recent months, security officials and analysts have worried that the city could become a target for the Zetas, which has rapidly expanded since breaking with its old allies in the Gulf cartel in 2010.

The Zetas have been expanding west, from their base on the Gulf coast, and Sinaloa has apparently been sending proxy forces eastward into the territory of the Zetas or their allies, in what now appears to have become a nationwide battle.

"As long as there is definition on the division of territories, between Sinaloa and the Zetas, we are going to continue seeing this," said Benitez.

Guadalajara's mayor, Jorge Aristoteles Sandoval, told reporters that "these acts of barbarism show how the war between cartels, and crime, is getting more brutal."

"It's sad to see what's going on," taxi driver Jesus Amado said. "We used to be looking at the problem from afar. Now we're not, we've got it right here."

Officials initially reported that there were 23 bodies found. Ulises Enrique Camacho, a spokesman for the attorney-general's office, said Thursday afternoon that the toll had risen to 26.

Crime in this colonial city of some 1.5 million people was historically dominated by the powerful Sinaloa cartel, but the group's tight grip was shattered by the death of its regional commander, Ignacio "Nacho" Coronel, in a shootout with federal police in July 2010.

Guadalajara's murder rate then soared as factions of the cartel known as the New Generation and the Resistance battled to control Coronel's territory and assets. Street battles have left hundreds dead in the city and surrounding areas.

Killing slowed to a trickle during the Oct. 15-30 Pan American Games, which brought a massive influx of police and soldiers. Law-enforcement officials and analysts said they were nonetheless concerned that a Zetas onslaught could be imminent.

On Wednesday, 17 bodies were found burned in two pickup trucks in a strikingly similar attack in Sinaloa, the home state of the eponymous cartel. Twelve of the bodies were in the back of one truck, some of them handcuffed and wearing bulletproof vests.

'Mahna Mahna': The Muppets & Celebs Sing Along (VIDEO)

Without question, Kermit and his felt friends are the true stars of "The Muppets," and the world is super geared up to see all their singing, dancing and laugh-a-minute antics when the film hits theaters this week. But human celebrities have always been an important part of the Muppets' performances, from the first episode of "The Muppet Show" up through all of their previous films, and this new flick is no different.

This time around, Jason Segel, who co-wrote the film, and Amy Adams will be the featured human stars, but there are plenty of more big Hollywood names that will grace the screen in smaller roles. Rashida Jones plays a begrudging TV network executive, while Neil Patrick Harris, Sarah Silverman and many others have cameos.

Just like all of us, they couldn't help but get swept up in the Muppet madness, and this musical montage is great, fun proof.

Tanier: Ready for a football feast

Feast on this holiday lineup: Packers-Lions, Dolphins-Cowboys, 49ers-Ravens

ANALYSIS

updated 9:43 a.m. ET Nov. 23, 2011

Mike Tanier

Six teams, all of them coming off a victory. Five of them with winning records, four of them in first place. The only team with a losing record is on a three-game winning streak.

Thanksgiving football doesn?t get any better than this.

Let?s get right to the good stuff: fast facts about each of the teams playing on Thursday, appetite whetting tidbits to get you ready for a good gorging.

Ranking Rodgers
Aaron Rodgers showed signs of mortality against the Lions, though it is telling that a 299-yard, three-touchdown performance in a win can now be considered an ?off day? for him. Rodgers is on pace to shatter the single-season quarterback rating record: he currently has a 128.8 efficiency rating, 7.7 points above Peyton Manning?s 2004 season.

Yes, efficiency rating is a flawed, confusing, messy stat. We?re just having some fun here. And despite the stat?s shortcomings, there is no way to ?fluke? a rating in the 120?s over a full season.

How amazing is Rodgers? rating? Imagine him throwing 50 straight incomplete passes: no catches, no touchdowns, just a string of ugly throws lasting about two games. At the end of that historically terrible slump, Rodgers would still have a rating of 112.1: fifth on the all-time single season list, just above Tom Brady?s rating from last year, when he threw 36 touchdowns and just four interceptions!

A 50-pass incompletion streak is not going to happen, so let?s project a more realistic slump. Let?s say Rodgers turns into a mediocre quarterback and goes 15-of-30 for 150 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in every game for the rest of the year. That would leave him with season statistics of 4,068 yards, 41 touchdowns, 10 interceptions, and a 64.4 percent completion rate. His efficiency rating would be 105.1. That may not sound as historic, but it would still rank 17th all time, ahead of Rodgers? already impressive ratings in 2009 and 2010.

So while Rodgers? statistics may well settle down as the season winds down and cold weather hits, it will take a lot of settling before his numbers are anything short of ?epic.? Rodgers is making a case for all-time greatness, and that case keeps getting stronger.

Lions roar!
The Lions enter Thanksgiving this season with seven or more wins for just the fourth time since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970.

That?s an amazing four decades of futility, especially when you realize that during the 1980s and early 1990s, the season started promptly on Labor Day, and there were no bye weeks. The Lions Thanksgiving game was often the team?s 13th game of the season, not the 11th like this year, and you would think that parity and dumb luck would result in a 7-5 record every couple of years or so. Instead, it has been a pretty reliable once-per-decade event: the Lions were 7-5 in 1980, 8-4 in 1991, 7-4 in 2000, and are 7-3 right now. It is due to happen again around 2020.

Jokes about how irrelevant the Lions are on Thanksgiving have become clich?s, but the team has earned the abuse. Since 2001, the average Lions record on Thanksgiving has been three wins and 7.2 losses. The Lions have been over .500 just 12 times since the merger. Five of those winning records occurred between 1970 and 1975, so the Lions have been realistically in the playoff hunt for their traditional holiday appearance just five times since I learned to ride a bicycle.

Here is a rundown of the five Lions teams with the best Thanksgiving winning percentages in modern NFL history. Prepare to be underwhelmed:

1) 2011 Lions (7-3): You know these guys, and you were probably ready to count them out around halftime of Sunday?s Panthers game. Warts and all, they are easily the best Lions team since Barry Sanders retired.

2) 1991 Lions (8-4): A vintage Barry Sanders run ?n? shoot team. These Lions finished 12-4 and beat the Cowboys in the first round of the playoffs. It was the last Lions' playoff victory. It was one-fifth of a century ago.

3) 1981 Lions (2-1): A strike ate up most of the September and October schedule in 1982. Led by running back Billy Sims and pass rusher Bubba Baker, these Lions not only had a .667 winning percentage by technicality on Turkey Day, but backed into a modified playoff tournament with a 4-5 record, losing 31-7 in the first round.

4) 2000 Lions (7-4): Gritty, forgettable team coached by arch-conservative Bobby Ross, who never met an off-tackle run he didn?t like. Charlie Batch was the quarterback, and the Lions eventually finished 9-7 but out of the playoffs.

5) 1971 Lions (6-3-1): The Lions spent the early 1970s hanging around .500 or just above it. Greg Landry was the quarterback, Lem Barney the star defender, and cigarettes cost four cents per pack and were sold in junior high cafeterias, or something like that.

Only two of those teams made the playoffs, one on a technicality, which reminds us what an uphill battle against history these Lions are battling. What?s worse, the next team on our winning percentage list is one all of us can remember: the 2007 Lions, who were 6-4 before losing to the Packers on Thanksgiving. That team finished 7-9 and went 0-16 the following year. Who are the Lions facing Thursday? Oh yeah. Maybe this year will be different from most of the last 40.

Dolphins resurface
The Dolphins have won their last three games by a combined score of 86-20 after losing their first seven games. The primary reason for their turnaround is simple: the Dolphins have fixed their red zone offense.

Here?s a breakdown of how Miami fares when it has the ball inside the opponent's 20-yard line.

WhenRed zone tripsTDsGoal-to-goTDs
First six games217114
Last four games131076
The table shows the Dolphins? red zone and goal-to-go touchdown rates in their first six games and their last four. Why their last four games, not their last three? The Dolphins really got their act together during their close loss to the Giants, but some late-game Eli Manning heroics obscured their turnaround. The Dolphins went from a horrible red zone team to a very good one about a month ago.

The Dolphins reached the red zone about 3.5 times per game in their first six games and 3.25 times per game in the last four, so their open field offense has not changed much. They have just traded in many, many field goals (and some critical turnovers) for touchdowns.

The Dolphins have become more effective in the red zone because they have stopped trying to force the ball to Brandon Marshall. They have gotten creative about using end-arounds to Reggie Bush and Brian Hartline when close to paydirt. Big targets like Anthony Fasano and fullback Charles Clay have gotten involved over the middle. The Dolphins are no longer predictable at the goal line, and with their offense just as good inside the 20 as everywhere else (not great, mind you, but good enough), the Dolphins are officially off laughingstock life support.

Dallas difference maker
Those of us who tuned in for the DeMarco Murray Show against the Redskins were disappointed: Murray gained just 73 yards on 25 carries and was frequently stuffed at the line of scrimmage.

Here?s a breakdown of how Dallas has done on the ground this season when fullback Tony Fiametta is/isn't available to play.

Fiametta's statusRushesYardsYards per rush
With him26162.56.25
Without27.2585.753.14
A major reason the Cowboys running game was sluggish on Sunday was the absence of fullback Tony Fiametta, the unsung hero of the Cowboys season. Fiametta rarely touches the ball, but his lead blocking has made Murray a star and the Cowboys surprise contenders in the NFC.

How important is Fiametta? The table shows the Cowboys rushing stats in the six games Fiametta played and the four games he missed. It?s true that the Cowboys faced some great defenses like the Lions and Jets without Fiametta, and weak defenses like the Rams with him. There is also a 91-yard Murray run in the mix that skews the data. Still, when yards and yards per rush nearly double with one player in the lineup, it says something.

Fiametta missed Sunday?s game with an undisclosed illness, and early in the week he was still suffering from unexplained nausea. If he returns to the lineup Thursday, you will notice the difference, and so will DeMarco Murray.

Kimberly McCullough to leave "General Hospital" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? In yet another blow to the ailing soap-opera genre, "General Hospital" star Kimberly McCullough is leaving the series.

McCullough is leaving the long-running soap -- which she joined in 1985, at the age of 7 -- in order to focus her efforts behind the camera.

"Kimberly McCullough has decided to pursue her dream of directing full-time so she has decided to leave 'General Hospital' as storyline dictates," the network said in a statement.

McCullough has played Robin Scorpio on the series for the better part of three decades, with her initial stint lasting from 1985 to 1996. Appearing on and off in the ensuing years, McCullough rejoined the cast in 2005. In the 1990s the character generated headlines when she was diagnosed as HIV-positive.

The good news? The show plans to send her off with a bang -- which should be a tall order, given that a recent storyline had another character threatening to inject Robin's blood into her husband, Patrick.

"Expect a poignant and must watch storyline for Robin and Patrick," ABC said.

McCullough's decision to leave comes shortly after the announcement that her co-star, Jonathan Jackson (who plays Lucky), is departing the series.

Soap Opera Digest first reported the news.
