EPA grants 16 states clean gas waivers after Sandy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Obama administration is temporarily waiving some Clean Air Act requirements in 16 states and the District of Columbia to reduce fuel disruptions from Superstorm Sandy.

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson says in a letter to governors that extreme circumstances related to Sandy will prevent enough gasoline from reaching consumers.

The waiver lets conventional gasoline be sold instead of cleaner-burning reformulated gasoline in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and the District of Columbia. A blend of reformulated and regular gasoline will be allowed in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina.

The waivers last through Nov. 20.

The EPA also says New Jersey residents can use heating oil in emergency generators and pumps if cleaner diesel is unavailable.

Jack Daniel's Sinatra Select begins slow rollout - Dowd on Drinks ...

Frank Sinatra?s long love affair with blues, broads and booze, as he often phrased it, was well chronicled during the iconic singer-actor?s lifetime. Now, 14 years after his death, his favorite brand of whiskey is honoring him.

Jack Daniel?s Sinatra Select was unveiled this week, the first step in a drawn-out marketing plan.

Sinatra Select, bottled at 90 proof (45% abv), is matured longer than the standard Jack Daniel?s, in ?Sinatra barrels? that have carved interior grooves to expose the whiskey to more wood. That results in a faster maturing spirit.

The new expression will be launched ? with an initial suggested retail price of $150 per 750 ml bottle ? at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas Airport in December. It then will be rolled out to about 200 other airport locations around the world in January.

The marketing plan calls for selling Sinatra Select at the Jack Daniel?s distillery in Lynchburg, TN, beginning in 2013, and eventually being made available in other domestic markets.

Why the delays?

?We hope people will both collect it and consume it,? said Jim Perry, managing director of Brown-Forman Travel Retail. ?The year 2015 will be Frank Sinatra?s 100th birthday. Over the next couple of years, we?ll be building up to that moment.?

(AP) ? Friends, family and former colleagues paused before the flag-draped casket of former U.S. Sen. George McGovern on Thursday to pay tribute to the liberal Democrat who ran for president against Richard Nixon and lost and who later became a champion in the fight against global hunger.

About two dozen people lined up outside the First United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls before the start of the public viewing and prayer service for McGovern, who died Sunday at age 90. His funeral is Friday.

Vice President Joe Biden, who served alongside McGovern in the Senate in the 1970s and early '80s, was among the confirmed guests expected to attend Thursday.

"I was honored to serve with him, to know him and to call him a friend. ... Above all, George McGovern was a generous, kind, honorable man," Biden said Sunday in an emailed statement after McGovern's death.

The two days of remembrance for the staunch liberal will include some of South Dakota's highest ranking officials from both sides of the political spectrum. Sen. John Thune, Rep. Kristi Noem and South Dakota Gov. Dennis Daugaard, all Republicans, have confirmed they plan to attend. Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., is scheduled to speak at the 6:30 p.m. Thursday prayer service.

It isn't yet clear who will speak Friday at the funeral inside the Mary Sommervold Hall, which seats 1,800 people. McGovern family spokesman Steve Hildebrand said the family will not announce who is attending.

It's possible that former President Bill Clinton and former Republican presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Bob Dole could attend. Clinton and his wife, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, met McGovern while campaigning for him in 1972 and remained friends. Bill Clinton later appointed McGovern as ambassador to the United Nations' food and agriculture agency and awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country's highest civilian honor.

McGovern later was appointed to be the first UN Global Ambassador on World Hunger. Dole and McGovern co-founded the Food for Education program for children in poverty-stricken countries.

McGovern, who railed against the Vietnam War as a senator and later lost his 1972 presidential bid to Republican Richard M. Nixon in a historic landslide, is to be buried at a later date at Rock Creek Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Sioux Falls business managers are preparing for an influx of customers, though they don't know just how many.

Tiffany Semmler, a manager at Minervas Restaurant, a few blocks from the site of the funeral, is bracing for a busy Friday.

"You never know if people are coming from out of town and going directly to the funeral, we might not get an excessively busy lunch. If they decide to go directly home after the funeral, we won't get a big push after the funeral," she said, noting that the restaurant is planning to schedule an additional server and cook.

"If everyone stays in town and isn't going back to work on Friday, we could get hit really hard," she said.

At least one hotel is offering a discount for those attending the funeral of McGovern, who was born in Avon and grew up in Mitchell.

The executive director of the Sioux Falls Regional Airport bets most out-of-towners will be driving. Pheasant hunting season opened last weekend, said Dan Letellier, and the airport's 23 daily flights Thursday and Friday are already booked.

"Any national figure or business leaders from other parts of the country may very well end up chartering flights or corporate jets," he said.

SB Nation Week 8 NFL Power Rankings: Browns Remain at No. 30

After losing to the Colts this past Sunday, the Browns are still ranked No. 30 overall.

In SB Nation's Week 8 NFL Power Rankings, Joel Thorman kept the Cleveland Browns as the No. 30 ranked team, despite their loss to the Indianapolis Colts. I did actually get my wish that I've had all season, though, and that is the fact that the Jacksonville Jaguars are finally the worst-ranked team in football. I guess I can finally sleep at night. It only took injuries to Blaine Gabbert and Maurice Jones-Drew, but it finally happened. Here's what Joel said about the Browns this week:

30. Cleveland Browns (LW: 30, 1-6): Is the Jimmy Haslam era really going to be the start of something new in Cleveland? It really might be, if he can find a coach who doesn't bury his head in the sand on fourth-and-one.

Here is how the rest of the AFC North fared in the rankings:

Baltimore: No. 8 (down from No. 2) Falling
Pittsburgh: No. 11 (up from No. 16) Rising
Cincinnati: No. 18 (down from No. 17) Falling
Cleveland: No. 30 (push from No. 30)

The Ravens were taken down a peg in the rankings after being blown out by the Houston Texans. No. 8 overall is where they should have been last week, and then they should've fallen even further this week. Baby steps, I suppose. The Steelers should not have warranted a five-spot increase in rankings for beating the lowly Bengals, and the Bengals should have dropped more than one spot for their loss. Am I the only person who thinks our division is tumbling down?

    Everything in place for Tigers

Detroit features best pitcher, hitter and manager, all looking to cement legacies

    Image: VerlanderReuters

Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander and slugger Prince Fielder are just two reasons to expect Detroit to win the World Series, writes Tony DeMarco.

    ANALYSIS

    By Tony DeMarco

    updated 2:45 a.m. ET Oct. 23, 2012

    Tony DeMarco

This is the Detroit Tigers' time.

The next 10 days begin a window that will extend two, maybe three more seasons. And nothing less than at least one World Series title is going to be acceptable.

Not for 83-year-old owner Mike Ilitch, who desperately wants to add a World Series trophy to four Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings.

Not for a franchise that hasn't won it all since Sparky Anderson's 'Bless You, Boys' in 1984.

And not for the legacies and Hall of Fame candidacies of Jim Leyland, Miguel Cabrera and Justin Verlander.

Taking absolutely nothing away from the San Francisco Giants ? a talented team riding an emotional high, and one that unexpectedly went all the way only two Octobers ago ? it's lined up for the Tigers.

But they must take the final step now, or face mounting pressure to do so before their window of opportunity closes.

"The best manager in baseball,'' is what Tigers' president/general manager Dave Dombrowski said about Leyland amidst the post-ALCS title celebration.

The recent retirements of Bobby Cox, Lou Piniella, Joe Torre and Tony La Russa make the 67-year-old Leyland the game's winningest active manager with 1,676 regular-season victories ? 95 more than Dusty Baker.

But Leyland needs that second World Series title to help legitimize his boss' claim. He's just one of a handful of active managers (Mike Scioscia, Ozzie Guillen, Joe Girardi, Bruce Bochy, Charlie Manuel) with one and Leyland's came long before any of the others, with the 1997 Florida Marlins.

Terry Francona, recently hired in Cleveland, where he won't be winning any more soon, is the only active manager with two World Series titles.

Leyland's other shot came in 2006, when the Tigers failed in the favorite's role ? upset in five games by the St. Louis Cardinals, and beating themselves with pitchers' fielding errors in the process. They'll carry that same burden favored role again.

But this isn't the playoff-inexperienced bunch Leyland took to the 2006 postseason. It had been 19 seasons since the Tigers' last playoff appearance, and just three seasons prior, the 2003 team lost 119 games.

There were no superstars on that roster, either ? just a group of standout veterans such as Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen and a rejuvenated Pudge Rodriguez. Verlander won 17 games as a 23-year-old, but Kenny Rogers was the ace, and 38-year-old closer Todd Jones made too many save opportunities interesting.

In contrast, this Tigers team has become one of the game's priciest at $132-plus million (fifth-highest), is coming off two consecutive division titles, and is in its third postseason in Leyland's seven seasons in Detroit.

The superstars are right in the midst of peak-production seasons, and almost the entire core of position-player regulars and starting rotation members are in the 25-30-year-old range. So if not now, when? Especially when the AL's two traditional financial juggernauts in New York and Boston face uncertain near-futures.

People forget that Cabrera already has a World Series ring ? as a 20-year-old rookie with the 2003 Marlins. But capping a Triple Crown (and most likely, MVP) season with a World Series title would mean something altogether different to his legacy.

Verlander has made his career goal clear: Cooperstown. Cy Young Awards and MVPs help, but nothing carries as much weight as World Series rings.

There has been no more-dominant pitcher this postseason, and as if he needs any more motivation, don't forget that Verlander cost the Tigers home-field advantage in this series with a terrible first inning in the All-Star Game.

Verlander is lined up for Game 1, while Giants' ace Matt Cain was forced into an NLCS Game 7 start, tilting the rotation match-ups Detroit's way.

In addition to Cain, the Giants received tremendous NLCS starts from Ryan Vogelsong and Barry Zito. But nobody can match the numbers Tigers' starters put up through the first two rounds:

    • 5-1, 1.02 ERA, .162 opponents batting average, 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings.

Lastly, the Tigers learned the hard way in 2006 that a long layoff after a quick ALCS can lead to problems. This time, Detroit-area weather cooperated enough to allow them to play intrasquad games with their instructional league players. That doesn't come close to matching playoff intensity, of course, but staying sharp and maintaining timing should result.

Hyundai goes snowboarding with the Veloster Alpine concept

The Veloster Alpine will be on display at the SEMA Show

The Veloster Alpine will be on display at the SEMA Show

A joint project with Korean aftermarket performance parts manufacturer ARK Performance and several other partners, the Veloster Alpine proves that Hyundai has more than one SEMA vision. This ode to the extreme winter sports lifestyle gets upgrades under the hood and around the interior and exterior.

"Our Veloster Alpine concept reflects the diverse lifestyle versatility we envisioned in the original Veloster concept," Ted Lee, owner of ARK performance, Inc., said in a press release. "This extreme sports coupe concept will appeal to winter sports enthusiasts who love to carve the snow as much as a twisty canyon road."

The car looks like a highway iceberg thanks to its glossy pearl white and blue paint job. While we haven't seen the interior yet, we know that the color scheme continues there, where Alcantara, Italian leather and WeatherTek breathable fabric procured by JPM Coachworks give driver and passengers a cozy cabin to retreat to after a bone-chilling day. The blend of materials was chosen for its durability under wet, GORE-TEX-dripping conditions.

ARK caresses 232 horses out of the 1.6-liter engine with its own performance exhaust system and oil cooler, along with outside upgrades like BTRcc engine bay parts and tuning and a K&N intake system. Other performance enhancements include an ARK performance coilover system, ARK Big Brake Kit and Rays Gramlight 57Xtreme Wheels shod in Nitto INVO tires.

A body kit with bumpers, side skirts, rear wing and fenders enhances aerodynamic performance, and custom headlights and taillights add a distinct set of eyes. A Yakima snowboard rack with included boards and a set of Rally Armor mudflaps make the Alpine a suitable ride for shuttling to the mountain on any powder morning.

The Veloster Alpine will be on display at SEMA, which runs from October 30 to November 2 in Las Vegas.

TV, devices in kids' bedrooms linked to poor sleep, obesity

    Tuesday, October 23, 2012

Children who bask in the nighttime glow of a TV or computer don't get enough rest and suffer from poor lifestyle habits, new research from the University of Alberta has shown.

A provincewide survey of Grade 5 students in Alberta showed that as little as one hour of additional sleep decreased the odds of being overweight or obese by 28 per cent and 30 per cent, respectively. Children with one or more electronic devices in the bedroom?TVs, computers, video games and cellphones?were also far more likely to be overweight or obese.

"If you want your kids to sleep better and live a healthier lifestyle, get the technology out of the bedroom," said co-author Paul Veugelers, a professor in the School of Public Health, Canada Research Chair in Population Health and Alberta Innovates ? Health Solutions Health Scholar.

Veugelers, director of the Population Health Intervention Research Unit that works with the Alberta Project Promoting active Living and healthy Eating (APPLE Schools), said the research is the first to connect the dots on the relationship between sleep, diet and physical activity among kids. Nearly 3,400 Grade 5 students were asked about their nighttime sleep habits and access to electronics through the REAL Kids Alberta survey. Half of the students had a TV, DVD player or video game console in their bedroom, 21 per cent had a computer and 17 per cent had a cellphone. Five per cent of students had all three types of devices.

Some 57 per cent of students reported using electronics after they were supposed to be asleep, with watching TV and movies being the most popular activity. Twenty-seven per cent of students engaged in three or more activities after bedtime.

Researchers found that students with access to one electronic device were 1.47 times as likely to be overweight as kids with no devices in the bedroom. That increased to 2.57 times for kids with three devices, with similar results reported among obese children.

More sleep also led to significantly more physical activity and better diet choices, researchers found.

Co-author Christina Fung noted that children today are not sleeping as much as previous generations, with two-thirds not getting the recommended hours of sleep per night. In addition to healthy lifestyle habits, a good night's sleep has been linked to better academic outcomes, fewer mood disorders and other positive health outcomes, she said.

"It's important to teach these children at an earlier age and teach them healthy habits when they are younger."

With election near, sober Romney on foreign policy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney abruptly moderated his foreign policy positions in this week's debate on issues like ending the war in Afghanistan and averting another conflict in Iran, hoping to neutralize one of President Barack Obama's main strengths with the election only two weeks away. But the move toward the political center comes with potential pitfalls.

By abandoning several of his sharpest criticisms of Obama from the past several months, Romney risks upsetting some conservatives and reinforcing the allegation ? levied repeatedly by the president on Monday night ? that his positions lack conviction and leadership.

His aim was to appear sober and serious, a plausible commander in chief, by not engaging in saber-rattling for political points. By narrowing the gap between his positions and those of Obama, he also may have succeeded in giving undecided voters, particularly women, the impression that he would lead a war-weary America into another conflict only reluctantly.

Romney aides said both the tone and substance of their boss' arguments were intentional and that he carried with him into the debate a key piece of advice: Talk about peace.

The overarching goal, they said, was for Romney to look like a suitable commander. After adopting a more assertively militaristic tone to win the GOP nomination amid challenges from more conservative candidates, he sought at all costs to avoid appearing as a warmonger.

"I want to see peace," Romney said in his closing statement.

The shifts in the debate were stark for a candidate who only last week described Obama's foreign policy as "unraveling before our very eyes."

Unconditionally endorsing Obama's 2014 deadline for removing U.S. combat troops from Afghanistan, Romney reversed his opposition to what he had termed a "political" timetable that wasn't necessarily supported by U.S. generals on the ground. And he declared the president's troop surge in Afghanistan a success, after previously accusing Obama with removing too many troops too quickly.

On Iran, Romney stressed that efforts to dissuade the Islamic Republic from developing a nuclear weapon should be "through peaceful and diplomatic means." That came after spending the past year-and-a-half lambasting Obama for failing to levy a credible military threat against Iran and spending too much time trying to rein in Israel's hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Monday night, Romney's said Obama's sanctions on Iran were working, calling war a last resort: "It is something one would only consider if all of the other avenues had been tried to their full extent."

And on Syria, Romney modified the argument for deeper involvement he had presented in a foreign policy address earlier this month in Virginia. He argued at that time for a concerted, U.S.-led approach to ensure that Syrian rebels obtain the weapons to defeat the Assad government's "tanks, helicopters and fighter jets." On Monday he adopted Obama's caution by emphasizing the need to ensure arms don't reach "the wrong hands" and stating unequivocally that he wouldn't pursue U.S. military involvement in the conflict.

He expressed his support "entirely" for the administration's escalated drone campaign against terrorist suspects overseas and said the president acted rightly in urging Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak to leave power despite three decades of close partnership with the United States.

Obama seized on Romney's shift, rather than his new agreeability.

"We are accustomed to seeing politicians change their position from four years ago," Obama told a Florida rally Tuesday. "We are not accustomed to seeing politicians change their positions from four days ago."

The new focus reflected Romney pitching his case to a changed audience. Having largely satisfied the Republican base over several grueling months of primary campaigning, Romney is now making a last-ditch appeal to women, independents and America's remaining undecided voters as the Nov. 6 election nears. National polls show the president and the challenger running neck and neck, with battleground states such as Ohio, Virginia and Florida ? the scene of Monday's debate ? perhaps proving pivotal.

Romney's move toward the center on foreign policy follows a similar shift he has tried to engineer on domestic issues. In recent weeks, he's softened his rhetoric on immigration, emphasized the importance of regulating Wall Street banks and used a TV ad to emphasize his support for abortion rights in instances of rape and incest and if the mother's health is threatened, all risky positions in a GOP primary battle.

While Romney continues to criticize Obama for military spending cuts, his decision not to visit Israel as president and for failing to challenge Chinese currency manipulation and intellectual property theft, talking up peace was a new wrinkle designed in part to broaden his appeal particularly to women.

During debate preparation, Romney's advisers looked to the first encounter between Ronald Reagan and President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Answering his first question in that debate, Reagan said: "Our first priority must be world peace, and that use of force is always and only a last resort, when everything else has failed."

Aides also urged Romney to follow Reagan in projecting optimism.

"I'm optimistic about our future," Romney said in his closing statement.

The strategy came as a surprise to some conservatives, who expected Romney to challenge Obama directly on some of the biggest foreign policy issues as he had with the economy, unemployment and debt in their first debate earlier this month. Republican commentators lamented Romney's use of "kid gloves" against Obama and his failure to challenge Obama on the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Libya seemed teed-up for Romney after weeks when he and other Republicans had hammered the administration for possible intelligence and security failures and a shifting message on how it happened.

Asked about the attack with the first question of the debate, Romney instead chose to focus on the larger challenges facing a Middle East in the throes of democratic transition and the continued threat posed by al-Qaida and Islamist extremism. After Obama parried by saying he was investigating the attack and going after the perpetrators, one of Romney's most obvious lines of attack was effectively eliminated from the discussion.

A Romney aide said the Libya issue was already clarified.

"The governor's made clear in many different forums and interviews that he believes that there are more questions than answers at this point," senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said. "He's covered that ground."

Aides said the candidate wanted to avoid any traps in territory that he was less familiar with, perhaps explaining the Republican's comfort in allowing the conversation to veer toward education, automobiles, job creation plans and other economic questions.

On many of these issues, Romney has outscored Obama in national polls. On foreign policy, the president has held an advantage. And Romney has struggled to establish his national security credentials after a problematic summer tour overseas that saw him offend his British hosts by questioning their security preparations for the Olympic Games and raise hackles among Palestinians who accused him of racism when he said culture was part of the reason Israelis were more economically successful than they.

Ex-CIA agent pleads guilty to leaking ID of covert operative

    /

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou, left, and his attorney John Hundley, leave federal court in Alexandria, Va., on Jan. 23.

By Pete Williams, Rich Greenberg and Michael IsikoffNBC News

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou, accused of leaking sensitive classified information to reporters, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to? revealing the identity of a covert operative.?

Kiriakou, who initially pleaded not guilty to five federal charges, pleaded guilty to a single count at a hearing at U.S. District Court in Virginia. Under a plea bargain, he is expected to serve 30 months in prison when he is formally sentenced on Jan. 25. Prosecutors, in return, agreed to ask that the Bureau of Prisons let him serve his time at a minimum security camp in Pennsylvania.

Kirakou was accused of furnishing classified secrets to a New York Times reporter -- and lying to the government -- about another CIA officer's role in the capture of Abu Zubaydah, the former high-ranking al-Qaida leader who was waterboarded more than 80 times after his capture.

Kiriakou?s guilty plea means that some journalists who were questioned about the case will not have to testify at a trial.

His guilty plea came after he lost a key pre-trial ruling. Kiriakou's lawyers had argued unsuccessfully that prosecutors should have to prove that he intended to harm the United States through his alleged leaks.

But U.S. District Judge Leonie Brinkema ruled last week that such a high standard should not apply to Kiriakou, a government employee with top-secret security clearances who knew well the dangers of disclosing classified information.

When he was indicted in April, Kirakou was charged with one count of disclosing classified information identifying a covert agent, three counts of illegally disclosing national defense information and one count of making false statements. He had faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

Kiriakou, who wrote a book detailing his CIA career, had tried to argue after the charges were filed that he was a victim of vindictive prosecution by government officials who believed he portrayed the CIA negatively, but the judge rejected those arguments as well.

'Blue Bloods' actress: Show ouster is 'shameful'

    Michael Loccisano / Getty Images

    By Us Weekly

"Blue Bloods'"?Jennifer Esposito is fighting mad.?Shortly after Deadline.com reported that the actress -- who has played Donnie Wahlberg's partner Jackie Curatola on the CBS series for three seasons -- was written off the show after going on medical leave, Esposito took to Twitter to slam her bosses.

    PHOTOS: Iconic TV characters

In a statement to Deadline Saturday, CBS TV Studios said Esposito, 39, was only able to work on a "part-time schedule" and that the show "regretfully had to put her character on a leave of absence" as a result.

Though CBS declined to go into specifics about the reason for her departure, Esposito revealed in a series of angry tweets that she was forced to sit out upcoming episodes under doctors' orders as she received treatment for celiac disease.?

    PHOTOS: Celebs' medical concerns

"CBS put me on unpaid leave and has blocked me from working anywhere else after my doctor said you needed a reduced schedule due to Celiac (disease)," tweeted Esposito, who suffers from the autoimmune disease of the small intestine.

"CBS didn't listen to my doc and I collapsed on set. Which everyone saw! After a week off, my doc said I could return to work but CBS implied that I was not truly ill and this was a scheme to get a raise!" the actress continued. "It's been almost two months without bringing me back to work and keeping me from working anywhere else! Absolutely shameful behavior."

    PHOTOS: Stars at work

An outspoken advocate for those suffering with celiac, Esposito has already filmed her (tentatively) final ?"Blue Bloods" episode, which will air on Nov. 2. CBS intends to use a rotating cast of actresses to appear as Danny Reagan's temporary partner. Megan Ketch will be introduced as his first fill-in on the November 2 show, and appear in four episodes.?

Said the studio: "(Jennifer) is a wonderfully talented actress and we hope that she will be able to return at some point in the future."

'Paranormal Activity 4' haunts top of movie charts

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The fourth "Paranormal Activity" fright flick crept into the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office with $30.2 million in U.S. and Canadian ticket sales.

Iran hostage thriller "Argo" earned $16.6 million and took second place, studio estimates released on Sunday showed. Two-time box office leader "Taken 2" fell to the No. 4 spot with $13.4 million from Friday through Sunday.

Low-budget "Paranormal Activity 4" opened short of distributor Paramount's projection for at least $35 million in domestic receipts during the movie's lead off weekend. The film also trailed its predecessor in the haunted house series. The third "Paranormal" rung up $53 million in its debut last October.

But with $26.5 million more from international markets, the fourth installment already had grossed far more than its tiny production budget of $5 million.

"We're thrilled," said Don Harris, Paramount's president of domestic distribution. "It was in a slightly more crowded market than a year ago."

The strong showing for the film bodes well for more to follow. "It is highly likely that we will do another," he said.

The new "Paranormal" chronicles the strange events that haunt a neighborhood after a woman and her young son move in. As in the earlier films, the movie uses a "found footage" style by capturing mysterious encounters with invisible forces on surveillance cameras.

The franchise produced by Jason Blum has brought in big bucks since the original hit theaters in 2009. The first three "Paranormal" films grabbed $577 million in global ticket sales. Each movie was produced for $5 million or less.

Receipts for "Argo" dropped 15 percent from a week earlier. The movie has earned glowing reviews from critics and a rare "A+" grade from audiences polled by CinemaScore.

"Argo" is based on the real-life rescue of U.S. government employees from Iran in 1979 under the guise of a fake movie production. Ben Affleck directs and stars in the film.

In fourth place, "Taken 2" stars Liam Neeson as a former spy who is kidnapped in Istanbul. The action film has grossed $105.9 million through three weekends.

In the No. 3 slot, family movie "Hotel Transylvania" pulled in $13.5 million at North American (U.S. and Canadian) theaters. Global sales for the animated film reached $119 million through Sunday.

"Alex Cross" starring Tyler Perry debuted in fifth place with $11.7 million domestically, was on the mark with the predictions by distributor Summit Entertainment.

The movie features Perry outside of the popular comedic role of Madea that he created. In "Alex Cross," the actor plays a psychologist and homicide detective in hot pursuit of a serial killer played by Matthew Fox. The film is based on the character at the center of a series of best-selling crime novels by James Patterson.

Paramount Studios, a unit of Viacom Inc released "Paranormal Activity 4." "Argo" was distributed by Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc. "Taken 2" was released by 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp. Sony Corp's film studio released "Hotel Transylvania."

"Alex Cross" was distributed by Summit Entertainment, a unit of Lions Gate Entertainment, in the United States. Entertainment One released "Alex Cross" in Canada.

Roleplayers Wanted For A Minimalist RP

Well, after nearly a year's gap, one novel written, a lot of schoolwork, extraordinary amounts of RPing and a significant increase in my writing proficiency, I'm back to this site, and have created a new roleplay.

It's more an experiment than anything. I was doing some reading on some of my favourite games (Journey and Ico) and discovered that they had one thing in common - they were experiments by games developers to see if something that had never been tried before could work.

So I'm trying something new. It's a heavily minimalist, character-driven RP, with heavy elements of philosophy. It should be good fun, and I need another five characters before I can get started. So, calling all of you avid RPers who are interested in trying something different for a change - sign up!

    http://www.roleplaygateway.com/roleplay/wandering-the-desert-of-time/

Read through the introduction and the rules, and then make your character. Be as creative as you want with your character's 'world', so to speak.

Also, I'm looking for a Co-GM for this RP, so if anyone's up for the job, please PM me.

And, with all that said and done... it's great to be back!

Design Insights Guest Blog: World Interiors News, Heart Home ...

Today we?ve had an exclusive interview with Stacey from Stacey Sheppard?s Blog?for???Brabantialife?s Design Insights? ?- a regular feature interviewing top designers, style experts, creatives and interior design god and goddesses.

Stacey has?written for a number of leading design and interiors publications and websites including?Designer Kitchen & Bathroom Magazine,?World Interiors News,?Heart Home Magazine?and?Freshome.com.

Let?s hear some Design Insights from Stacey:

    ?

1.0 What or who inspired you to have such a keen interest in interior design?

I have always been interested in home design and growing up I loved watching all the home and property improvement TV shows. But my love of interior design became really serious when I got a job working on a trade publication for the kitchen and bathroom industry. Since then it has spiralled out of control and become a full blown passion.

    ?

2.0 What trends do you most enjoy writing about??

As anyone who reads my blog will know, I have a rather consuming obsession with wallcoverings and with wallpaper in particular. On Wednesdays I tend to post about wallpaper and you would think that eventually I would run out of wallpapers to blog about, but there are so many great products out there that I never struggle to find something brilliant to feature. Aside from wallcoverings, I also really enjoy writing about flooring, lighting, and the use of colour in interior design. To be honest, there isn?t really anything I don?t enjoy writing about when it comes to interiors.

    ?

3.0 What decorating techniques/ideas would you recommend to a homeowner who wants to update a room without spending a fortune??

I would recommend using white or grey as the main colour for walls and choosing neutral colours for furniture. Then add pattern, texture and pops of colour with accessories such as cushions, curtains, rugs, lighting, bedding and pictures. That way you don?t risk your d?cor getting outdated and then having to spend a fortune updating it. If you do decide you need a bit of a makeover, you can simply change the accessories for a completely new look.

    ?

4.0 What is your favourite design magazine??

I guess the magazine that I read most often is Elle Decoration, but I am quite fickle when it comes to magazines. I generally tend to read whichever one has cover stories that attract my attention that month. I have a quick flick through before I buy them to see which ones feature the most products or articles that really catch my eye.

At the moment I have been enjoying various design magazines from Germany. Whenever I go away I like to buy a large selection of design magazines when I am at the airport as I like to see what the trends are in other parts of the world and what products there are that we might not necessarily be aware of in the UK.

I also really enjoy reading all the digital magazines that focus on interior design.? Adore Home and Est magazine are two of my favourites and they are both Australian.

    ?

5.0 How about your favourite website or blog?

This is tough and I couldn?t possibly choose just one favourite blog as I read so many. One of my favourites is Ideas to Steal. Written by two friends from Norway, the blog focuses on great interior design that people can use as inspiration for their own homes. I love reading this particular blog as it always features interiors that I have never seen anywhere else and the visuals are always really inspiring. It really is a great blog to read.

I also enjoy confessions of a design geek, written by freelance design writer Katie Treggiden. The blog has a strong focus on good design that makes people?s lives better and I particularly enjoy the out and about posts in which we can follow Katie?s design adventures as well as the creative spaces posts where she gives us an insight into the spaces in which creative people work.

My other favourites are Bright Bazaar by Will Taylor who always manages to hunt down the most beautiful and colourful products and the presentation and visual elements of his blog are a real inspiration to me as a blogger myself and I feel I could learn a lot from Will. Happy Interior Blog by Igor Josif is a great read too, as is Nordic Design by Catherine Lazure-Guinard and Design Hunter by Helen Powell.

    ?

6.0 Tell us about one of your favourite projects

My favourite writing projects are usually the ones where I interview designers. I just love hearing about what inspires their work and getting an insight into the people behind the brands, the products and the (famous) names. I particularly enjoyed interviewing Sir Terence Conran. With a career spanning over 60 years, Conran really is a veteran of the British design scene and I felt very privileged to have had the opportunity to quiz him about illustrious career. I also really enjoyed interviewing Ilse Crawford and finding out more about her people-centric approach to design.

    ?

7.0 What?s your favourite colour combination for the home?

My favourite colour combination for the home would be quite neutral. I like to keep things very simple and very natural. White is a great colour to choose for walls as it is timeless, never goes out of fashion, is very unassuming and doesn?t clash with anything. Some people however would find white a little too cold and clinical and that is why I like to pair it up with a lot of warm and natural materials and colours. Wood is one of my favourite combinations to use with white and I think wooden floors and wooden furniture against white walls is very calming and very reassuring. Then I like to add colourful accent colours and at the moment I really green, that really vibrant rich chartreuse type of green that epitomises springtime. There is something very comforting I find about white, wood and green.

    ?

8.0 What?s something you should never skimp on when decorating your home?

Products that you love. I think that people, myself included as I am very guilty of this, need to stop worrying so much about whether the things they fill their home with go together. There is no point recreating the pages of a magazine in your home as it will inevitably lack one vital ingredient?your personality.

    ?

9.0 Are there any insider interior design top tips we should know about for 2013?

This year we have seen a surge in the popularity of owls which have featured on practically everything from cushions, wallpaper and ceramics to fabrics and textiles. Going into 2013, I think we can expect to see an extension of this trend to include a greater variety of woodland creatures such as foxes, rabbits, badgers, squirrels and deers.

I also think we will see more products for interiors that are inspired by the surreal and the enchanted. Alice in Wonderland-style whimsy will bring a sense of fun, exaggeration and childish charm to interiors, helping us not to take things quite so seriously.

And a final top tip doesn?t actually have anything to do with interiors but it is to do with lifestyle in general. Launched a couple of months ago, The Simple Things is a new magazine that explores simple living. Coming from and living in Devon, this magazine really resonates with me and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to escape the hectic, fast-paced speed of city living, at least for as long as it takes to read the magazine.

10.0 And lastly?(cheeky I know!) what?s your favourite Brabantia product and why??

    My favourite Brabantia product is the Get Together range. It is an absolutely gorgeous collection of casual dining accessories including tea towels, napkins, placemats, kitchen towels, oven gloves, aprons, oven dishes, dinner plates, napkin rings, coasters, pan coasters, candle holders, and tooth pick holders ? everything you would need for successful entertaining. I only wish it came in more colours! [Note from the editor, good news Stacey, we now do the Get Together Range in Lavender too!}
