Rounds 1 and 2 didn?t last long, they weren?t fun, being ?yes? butted? or ?that wont work because? becomes tiresome, energy flags.? However, with round 3 the noise level increased dramatically as each person tried to out ?yes? and? each other.? There was a lot of laughter and creativity!

The Center for Public Integrity: Rick Santorum hopes to sweeten campaign pot with Jelly Belly visit

At first glance, Rick Santorum's decision to give a speech at the Jelly Belly Company's factory in Fairfield, Calif., seems a little odd.

But Jelly Belly isn't just any candy maker. The company -- best known for making jelly beans that taste like buttered popcorn and other interesting flavors -- is a major supporter of conservative causes and one of the few corporations to make direct contributions to a super PAC.

And this isn't just a speech -- the former Republican senator from Pennsylvania and GOP presidential contender is hosting a $1,000-a-head fundraiser to help his cash-strapped campaign, inside the factory, at the conclusion of the speech.

"Jelly Belly Candy Company looks forward to discussing sugar reform with presidential candidate Rick Santorum when he visits our Fairfield factory on Thursday, March 29," reads a company statement.

Jelly Belly has long been tied to Republicans, with President Ronald Reagan ranking as its most famous fan. (A portrait of the Gipper, who served the brand at his inauguration and in the Oval Office, made from 10,000 of the company's candies hangs in his presidential library.)

In September 2010, Jelly Belly became one of the few companies to take advantage of the post-Citizens United campaign finance laws, making a $10,000 corporate donation to Citizens for Economic & National Security, which was created to support California Republicans.

That amount made up nearly 20 percent of the super PAC's receipts.

Citizens was active in the battle between Democratic challenger Ami Bera and incumbent Republican Rep. Dan Lungren. The super PAC spent $35,000 in negative ads against Bera, who ended up losing to Lungren by seven percentage points.

When the Citizens United decision was handed down by the Supreme Court, the immediate concern was that corporations would flood the system with cash. Instead, super PACs are more likely to receive contributions from a handful of wealthy individuals than a corporate treasury.

A spokeswoman for Jelly Belly did not return a request for comment on its political donations.

Jelly Belly's chairman of the board and owner of the privately held corporation, Herman Rowland, is a frequent donor to conservative candidates and groups.

Since 2009, Rowland has donated more than $100,000 to federal political causes, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. That includes a $10,000 donation to Club for Growth Action, a pro-free market super PAC known for targeting incumbent Republicans seen as too liberal.

Rowland has also been personally active in the presidential race, giving to a number of candidates. He gave $2,500 both to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who dropped out of the race, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the frontrunner, as well as $1,000 to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Now, it seems, it's Santorum's turn.?

Manslaughter charged in Tacoma boy's death

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) ? A mother who authorities say left her 3-year-old son unrestrained in a car after she placed a pistol under the driver's seat has been charged with manslaughter in the death of the boy, who shot himself in the head while the woman went to get food.

The woman's boyfriend, who is the gun's owner, was also charged.

"Nothing is sadder than the death of a child, and when the death is the result of criminal negligence, there needs to be accountability," Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lindquist said Wednesday. "Guns are inherently dangerous, and the law, as well as common sense, requires that guns be handled responsibly, especially around children."

The mother, Jahnisha McIntosh, 23, and her boyfriend, Eric Vita, 22, made their initial appearance on the second-degree manslaughter charges Wednesday afternoon in Pierce County Superior Court. They both pleaded not guilty.

Julio Segura-McIntosh's death on March 14 was the third child shooting in Western Washington within three weeks. On Feb. 22, an 8-year-old girl was critically wounded by a gun that went off in a classmate's backpack in a Bremerton school. On March 10, the 7-year-old daughter of a Marysville police officer was killed when her brother found a gun in the family car.

In Julio's case, Vita and McIntosh had stopped for gas in Tacoma. Vita, who has a concealed weapons permit, removed his gun from his waistband to avoid alarming the clerk and placed it under the passenger seat, the prosecutor said.

Julio had unbuckled himself and climbed into the front seat to ask his mother for candy. McIntosh moved the gun from under the passenger seat to under the driver's seat so Julio could not reach it. Then, she went inside the convenience store for food, leaving Julio unrestrained, the prosecutor said.

Julio found the gun and shot himself in the head. McIntosh's 8-month old daughter was in the car at the time and was not hurt.

Friends and family told detectives that Vita routinely showed off the gun with a laser sight and on one occasion offered to let Julio hold the gun before another adult intervened.

Vita's attorney, David Gehrke, told KOMO that that shooting was a tragedy that has left everyone involved in shock. Vita acted reasonably, he said.

"I think he was being very careful. He did not just leave the gun there, without another adult present. And I think if the mother had stayed in there, this probably would not have happened," Gehrke said.

"My understanding is that the child went from the back seat to the front seat, got the gun, the mom took it away and said, 'No, leave that alone,' and then put it under her seat. And then inexplicably she got out and went into the convenience store to buy something," he said.

Gehrke said he's not blaming the mother.

"She lost her child, and that should be punishment for any parent in a circumstance like this," he said.

The child shootings have raised questions about Washington's gun laws. The state is one of 23 that doesn't have a specific law to prevent child access to firearms, such as mandatory trigger locks or criminal penalties for adults who allow children to access guns, according to the San Francisco-based group Legal Community Against Violence.

Washington state law is specific about carrying loaded pistols in vehicles, however. A person with a concealed weapons permit must lock the gun and conceal it from view if it is left in the car.

In the Bremerton classroom shooting that nearly killed Amina Kocer-Bowman, the Kitsap County prosecutor charged the mother of a boy who brought the gun in his backpack and the mother's boyfriend with felony assault for allowing the boy access to the .45-caliber handgun. Jamie Lee Chaffin, and her boyfriend, Douglas L. Bauer, have pleaded not guilty.

In the Stanwood shooting, the Snohomish County prosecutor's office said Wednesday the shooting is still under investigation by the sheriff's office. When the case is sent to the prosecutor's office, it will decide whether charges should be filed against Officer Derek Carlile, who left a loaded gun in the car.

Snohomish sheriff's spokesman Kevin Prentiss said Wednesday that investigators are wrapping up loose ends and finishing interview transcripts, and the case should go to the prosecutor's office within two weeks. Detectives used child interview specialists to question children.

What do you believe the hiring manager will think of you as this is portrayed? That?s right, your personal brand will blossom making you the favored candidate!

The importance of interviews

You lead a dress rehearsal up until the time of your interview. Your interview is your one-man or one-woman show. Just as actors rehearse their parts prior to a movie or play, competent job candidates do the same. Not only will you want to focus on the high points of what you wish to say, you also get into the mindset of your audience or the hiring company.

Companies fear hiring employees who:

The easiest way to demonstrate your standard of ethics if you do not have an appropriate story to share is to ask the person interviewing you to go into detail of what they are telling you so that you will have better understanding. Several benefits come from this type of request.

The benefits of your request

First, by volunteering that you don?t fully understand what is being said but want to learn demonstrates you will do your best to perform should they choose to hire you. You also demonstrate your integrity by admitting you need to hear more in order to understand what is being said in its entirety.

Secondly, people like to talk much more than they like to listen. You will be speaking to their ego when you ask them to explain their thoughts in full detail. You may learn a few insider tidbits that would otherwise not be revealed thereby giving you an advantage over the other candidates. It will also help you further qualify whether the position is right for you.

The third benefit is you will be seen not only as a team player but as a possible team leader by the way you lead the conversation through question and answer. Most people simply answer questions rather than take the lead on a give and take conversation.

Neutrino funding crunch could be good news for protons

Hard times for the US's largest neutrino experiment could have an unexpected upside, speeding up the search for the elusive decay of a proton.

The Large Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE), due to begin operating in 2022, would send neutrinos from Fermilab in Illinois to a detector in the abandoned Homestake gold mine in South Dakota. How the neutrinos behave on the trip could help reveal why the universe is made of matter, with no antimatter in sight.

But the experiment's future appeared uncertain last week when US Department of Energy director William Brinkman said the agency could not fund the $1.5 billion project unless it could start delivering results before 2022.

One solution is to use the detector to hunt for decaying protons before the neutrino experiment starts, says LBNE co-spokesman Milind Diwan. Previous studies have set the lifetime of a proton to be at least 10³⁴ years. With a detector as big as LBNE, one decay might be seen every year. Accomplishing both goals in the same project "would be very remarkable", Diwan says.

THE WOODLANDS, Tex.?Today's Mars is a frigid desert, a place where water?the key to life as we know it?has gone into hiding. Whatever water may have once existed on Mars in rivers, lakes or even oceans is now frozen into ice caps, locked up in hydrated minerals or buried in debris-coated glaciers.

But last year compelling evidence emerged that when conditions are right, salty brines may persist to this day in liquid form at midlatitude regions on Mars. Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona and his colleagues found tracks in high-resolution imagery that looked like liquid flowing downhill. The tracks appeared annually during the warmer Martian months on equator-facing slopes, extended downhill and then faded as temperatures dropped once again. One tantalizing interpretation was that the streaks were caused by briny water melting and seeping downhill through the soil.

At the annual Lunar and Planetary Science Conference being held here this week, the researchers provided an update on their search for and analysis of the mysterious features, which they call recurring slope lineae, or RSL. Not only have they more than doubled the count of known RSL but they have been unable to devise a good explanation that does not involve the presence of liquid water.

"No one has come up with alternative models that they believe," McEwen says. "Nor have we." Lujendra Ojha, an Arizona undergraduate student who has done much of the heavy lifting in identifying RSL in imagery from the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, announced in a talk at the conference that he and his colleagues have now confirmed RSL in 15 locations, up from seven when the features were first announced in a 2011 Science paper. Probable RSL have been identified on 23 additional slopes, but they have not yet been shown to recur year after year. "There's more there that we're going to find," McEwen says.

Other phenomena that have pointed to liquid water on modern-day Mars have plausible explanations involving only dry processes, McEwen notes. Streaky slopes closer to the equator, for instance, do not seem to display the seasonality that would be expected of melting and could simply be tracks from boulders rolling downhill. "In all these cases, you can explain the observations without liquid water," McEwen comments. "You have to favor the nonwater models if you can make it work. For the RSL, we can't make it work."

Support for the liquid-water explanation is coming from studies of arid, frigid regions here on Earth. In another talk at the conference, Joe Levy of Oregon State University compared RSL to similar-looking features caused by saline groundwater seeping downhill through the soil in Taylor Valley in Antarctica. Using satellite observations of Antarctic water tracks, Levy and a colleague found that they could estimate the soil's permeability from orbit by measuring how the tracks propagated downhill. And that estimate agreed reasonably well with the actual soil properties, which Levy and his colleagues have measured in field studies. "For flowing water features that darken the surface, it turns out you can do hydrogeology from orbit, which sure beats hiking," Levy said.

Applying the same calculations to Mars, he concluded that the RSL could be explained by brines if the slopes had the permeability of sand or silt. That matches the kind of soil expected to prevail at the sandy RSL sites. In other words, whatever is moving down the Martian slopes behaves as liquid would in that environment. "The RSL and the [Antarctic] water tracks are both flowing like water through sediment," Levy said. "If it moves like water, it may very well be water."
