NCAA to reconsider scholarship sanctions against BSU football

BOISE, Idaho ? Boise State says the NCAA will reconsider scholarship sanctions imposed on the football program.

In a statement issued Friday, the school said the NCAA Division I Infractions Appeals Committee found that scholarship penalties announced last September - in addition to Boise State's self-imposed sanctions - were excessive.

Boise State's voluntary measures included three reduced scholarships for one year and fewer preseason practices. The NCAA added scholarship reductions from 85 to 82 through the 2014 school year and limited contact during spring practice.

The matter is now sent back to the NCAA infractions committee for further review.

?Boise State has acknowledged and accepted the findings in the NCAA report for all of the identified sports. We have approached this case seriously, acted in full cooperation with the NCAA and implemented corrective actions and sanctions,? said University President Bob Kustra.

?However, we thought it important to appeal these football penalties due to the circumstances of this case and the ruling precedent, and we are pleased that the Appeals Committee agreed in the case of the scholarships. We will await a decision from the Infractions Committee on the final scholarship penalty.?

Additional practice penalties levied by the NCAA in September were upheld by the appeals committee.

The NCAA placed Boise State on probation for three years and imposed other sanctions, citing major violations by the football program and other sports. The school appealed the football portion of the sanctions while accepting the remaining punishment placed on its tennis and track programs.

"The entire process has deepened our commitment to compliance, resulted in tangible changes to our program and created a greater awareness of the NCAA rules,? Director of Athletics Mark Coyle said in the statement.

?Boise State moves forward in firm belief that proper adherence to NCAA rules is a top priority of the athletic program.?

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.
