7th Annual Humane Society Telethon raises more than $10K

A Wabash Valley animal shelter is on the receiving end of the community's generosity.

Thursday was our 7th Annual Terre Haute Humane Society Telethon at Honey Creek Mall.

We raised more than $10,000 in just four hours.

There are more than 175 animals currently at the shelter and it costs the shelter about $15,000 a week to care for them.

The president of the humane society board says the community's financial support is essential. "I think that they're noticing the hard work that we do and what we're giving back to the community. We have reduced our euthanasia rates, we have taken in 3,000 animals a year for the community. I think that [the donations] shows that they appreciate that," says Debbie Floyd.

Over the years NBC 2 has helped raise over $70,000 for the Terre Haute Humane Society thanks to this event.

You can always donate to the humane society by visiting their website.
